Mixed Carts & Eligibility

Written by Steve Jones

A mixed cart is when the customer’s order includes products with different fulfillment rules (e.g., some for pickup, some only for shipping).

Alpaca lets you control:

  • Whether to show pickup/delivery if any item is eligible (flexible), or only if all items are eligible (strict).

  • This can be configured separately for pickup and delivery under their settings.

How it works for customers:

  • If their cart doesn’t qualify for a method (e.g., one item can’t be picked up), Alpaca can:

    • Hide that method at checkout, or

    • Prompt them to remove ineligible items, if you enable this option.

Best practices:

  • Use “All eligible” to prevent customers from choosing fulfillment methods you can’t support for the entire order.

  • Use “Any eligible” if you want to offer maximum flexibility (but may need to manage split orders).

Troubleshooting:

  • If customers can’t pick a method, check:

    • Product-level eligibility in Alpaca

    • Your rate visibility rules

    • Cart contents (look for ineligible items)
